Piero, I’m sorry. This is what happened when I overpainted your work, “The Duke of Urbino.” But my deep admiration for you remains unchanged. The painting on the right is a copy made by an art student; I acquired it after it had been neglected and was about to be discarded, and used it as a sketch by dotting it with color. I then transformed it into the painting on the left through overpainting.
The original painting is a beautiful, harmonious work that I believe captures the worldview of the early Renaissance well. The red of the hat and clothing makes a strong impression, and the landscape visible in the distance is beautiful, like a memory. However, the world as I see it now does not look like that. The painting on the left is titled “Landscape and Human,” and this is how the world appears to me.
Perhaps the figure depicted is you. While it differs from the beauty of the original painting, I think this one is beautiful as well.
