阿修羅は仏教では仏法を守る八部衆のひとりだが、もともと古代インドのアスラ（生気、気力の意）は天界に住む善神であった。インドラがアスラの娘を奪ったことで両者は戦い続けることになり、アスラは戦闘神として天界を追われることになった。 （三つの顔をもつ阿修羅が柘榴の衣をまとっている。腕のひとつの摩耶夫人の右脇から釈迦が生まれた）
